The Commonwealth of Virginia has a set of laws that determine how the criminal justice system responds to violent crimes such as rape, sexual assault, and battering. They are far from perfect and new legislation intended to improve existing laws is introduced (and sometimes passed) in each session of the General Assembly.
Not all laws are enforced uniformly, but many advocates are working hard to improve the response to these crimes. Locally, the Charlottesville/Albemarle County Council on Sexual and Domestic Violence, which is comprised of professionals in the criminal justice system, representatives from advocacy groups for survivors, and allied professionals, has made great strides in improving our community's response to survivors.
You can become an advocate for yourself (or your loved ones) by becoming familiar with the laws and your rights.
