- In 1999, there were over 791,000 domestic violence victims, with 85% of
the crimes occurring against women. Over 50% of these women from 1993-1999
were victimized by a current dating partner and the highest rates of intimate
partner violence were against young women ages16-24. (Intimate Partner

- Approximately 671,110 women ages 12 and older suffered intimate partner
victimization in 1999. This number includes 91,470 rapes and sexual assaults,
65,970 robberies, 68,810 aggravated assaults and 444,860 simple assaults. In
general, 1 in every 7 of these perpetrators used a weapon and at least half
caused physical injury to their victim.
- Of the homicides of people ages 12 to 15, 10% of female victims were
killed by their intimate partner, from ages 16-19, 22% were killed by an
intimate partner, from ages 20-24, 32% were killed by an intimate partner and
from ages 25-34, 36% were killed by an intimate partner.
- The report showed that the official per capita rate in 1999 of non-fatal
intimate partner violence against females ages 16 to 24 was 15.6
victimizations per 1000 women.
- Women ages 16 to 24 were the most vulnerable to non-fatal intimate partner
violence, while women ages 35 to 49 were the most vulnerable to intimate
partner murder.
- Rates for intimate partner violence fell for women ages 20 to 49, while
the rates for other age brackets remain unchanged from 1993 to 1999.
